Alzheimer's disease

Alzheimer's disease is a disorder neurdegenerativo that, in its most common form, affects individuals above 65 years of age.
Approximately 24 million people worldwide suffer from Alzheimer.

The first case of what was then called Alzheimer's disease was first identified in 1901 by German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer.

Alzheimner's disease is caused by both the loss of brain cells is by some changes in the cerebral cortex, characterized by the accumulation and fibrous tangles or plaques around nerve. It is not known why these fibers and plaques develop in the brain. Research has shown various possible causes, both genetic not genetic. Some genes can cause the onset of the disease in relatively young individuals, whereas other genes may predispose an individual to the disease, but need a trigger like a stroke, head trauma or an obstruction of the arteries.
The real cause of the disease remains unknown for now.

The main symptoms of Alzheimer's disease include:
loss of short term memory
confusion, visual-spatial
loss of family skills, as well as the ability to recognize objects and people
neuropsychiatric symptoms or changes in behavior (such as outbreaks of violence or excessive passivity)
deterioration of musculature and mobility, leading to constriction in bed, unable to eat, incontinence (in advanced stages).

Once identified, the average life expectancy of a patient with Alzheimer's disease is about 7-10 years, although we know of cases where the final stage was reached after 4-5 years or, at the other end, after 21 years.

There is no way to prevent the onset of the disease. Aging itself can not be prevented, however, may be mitigated by acting on certain risk factors.

The main risk factors are:
aging
exposure to aluminum
head injury
circulatory disorders (diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, stroke)
smoke.

To reduce the risk of Alzheimer's onset may be useful:
intellectual stimulation (playing chess or doing crosswords)
Regular physical activity
Regular social interaction
Mediterranean diet rich in fruits and vegetables and low in saturated fat, in particular inbtegrata with vuitamine B, C, and E, omega-3 fatty acids, moderate alcohol consumption.

Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but some treatments are available that offer help on the symptoms and helps the memory, but not slow down the progression of the disease. Among the various treatments are:
inhibitors of acetilcolinesterasi
ginkgo biloba
FANS
psychosocial interventions (counseling, psychotherapy, reminiscences therapy, counseling therapy, behavioral reinforcement, cognitive rehabilitation)
supplements and herbal as Samambaia, cat's claw, velvet bean, catuaba, sarsaparilla, guarana, Damiana, mulungu, simarouba, suma, yerba mate, anamu.
